  • 2026

Welcome to the Phys-Math Workshop on Nonlinear Dynamics, Symmetries, and Quantum Gravity, which will be held at the Coloso Campus of the Universidad de Antofagasta, Chile, from September 21 to 25, 2026. This workshop brings together researchers in theoretical physics and mathematics to explore the interplay between nonlinear dynamics, symmetry principles, and quantum gravity—fields that are increasingly seen as deeply interconnected.

Nonlinear phenomena are central to many physical systems, from classical and quantum theories to gravity, where linear approximations often fail. From a mathematical perspective, nonlinear dynamics plays a key role through nonlinear differential equations, integrable systems, and geometric methods, offering powerful tools to analyze complex behavior.

Symmetries—encoded in algebraic structures such as Lie algebras and quantum groups—provide a unifying framework for understanding fundamental interactions. The development of these algebraic and topological structures goes hand in hand with physical insights into emerging symmetry principles, such as generalized symmetries, which play a key role in aspects like anomaly cancellation in quantum theories.

A longstanding open problem is the reconciliation of gravity with quantum theory. Combining insights from these areas, together with developments in string theory and M-theory, may shed light on the search for a consistent theory of quantum gravity. From a physical viewpoint, quantum gravity aims to provide a coherent description of spacetime at the smallest scales, where both nonlinear effects and symmetry principles become essential.

By fostering dialogue between physicists and mathematicians, this workshop aims to highlight emerging connections, share new techniques, and stimulate progress at the interface of nonlinear science, algebraic structures, and the quantum nature of spacetime.

The conference venue will take place at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Basic Sciences at the University of Antofagasta (https://www.uantof.cl/), located in Antofagasta, one of the largest cities in northern Chile. The University of Antofagasta is a medium-sized public institution, currently ranked second among Chilean universities in the Times Higher Education ranking, with nearly 75 years of tradition since its origins in the merger of the former Universidad Técnica del Estado (UTE) and the Antofagasta campus of the Universidad de Chile.

The Department of Physics at the University of Antofagasta is a research-oriented academic unit dedicated to the advancement of fundamental physics through teaching, research, and outreach. Its activities span undergraduate and graduate education, contributing to the training of highly qualified researchers. The department maintains a strong focus on theoretical and mathematical physics, with research lines that include quantum field theory, gravity, symmetry principles, and related areas at the interface of physics and mathematics. Its faculty members are actively engaged in international collaborations and contribute to the global scientific community through publications in high-impact journals. The department has a close relationship with the undergraduate program Licenciatura en Ciencias mención Física y Astrofísica, as well as with the graduate programs Magíster en Matemática Pura y Aplicada, and Doctorado en Física mención Física Matemática, playing a key role in the articulation of advanced training in physics and mathematics in the north of Chile.
